Remote workers pose unique challenges to the traditional backup strategy.
When we first realized that all of our important data was located in one location, we determined that a backup strategy had to be employed so that if we ever lost that centralized location, we could get everything back. Backups were traditionally on tape, which had a specific lifespan for usability.
The traditional backup strategy was simple and straightforward:
- Determine what type of backup Device to use
- Determine what you were going to backup
- Determine the frequency of your backups
- Determine how long to keep your backup
- Determine where to keep the backups
Best Practices for Businesses
Companies today are under more and more market, internal and external pressures to increase production while reducing costs. Telecommuting, while around for decades, has only become prevalent and acceptable over the last 10 years as an alternative to in-house employment. With the advent of the internet and improved remote access strategies, organizations small and large are implementing telecommuting strategies to reduce employee overhead and supply alternative work lives while staying competitive in the respective market spaces. To achieve this, both management and employees need to have an understanding of the requirements, expectations, rules and regulations that govern this telecommuting policy. Management in particular will be challenged to eliminate the “management by walking around” mentality and change to “management by trust” or “expectations”. In order to accomplish this, corporate leaders will need to work hard at establishing remote employee expectations and on going communication. Along with these and others, best practices lie in the needs of the organization and the benefits of the employee.
